Dr. Rebecca Lozada (Bio)
Community School Superintendent (Ret.)
District 32, Bushwick, Brooklyn

Dr. Rebecca Lozada, formerly the Community School Superintendent of District 32, dedicated her career to serving the scholars and families of Bushwick, Brooklyn, with an unwavering commitment to educational excellence and equity. A proud Latina of Puerto Rican descent and a native of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Rebecca’s personal and professional journey in education has been deeply shaped by her own experiences as a student in New York City Public Schools.

Her educational path began with challenges, as Rebecca she struggled in her early school years due to English being her second language. After being held back in third grade as an “at-risk” student, her life took a transformative turn when she met Ms. Rictor, a teacher who helped her overcome academic difficulties and built the skills she needed to thrive. This experience inspired Rebecca to become an educator herself, driven by the belief that all students can succeed and recognize their own significance—no exceptions.

Rebecca’s career spanned over 34 years, during which she held various roles that shaped her understanding of education. She began as an elementary school teacher in District 32, where she spent 18 years in the classroom before transitioning into a teacher instructional coach. She also served as an adjunct professor at LaGuardia Community College, teaching bilingualism and ESL to aspiring educators, further fueling her passion for bilingual and special education.

In 2008, Rebecca was appointed principal of a school in District 25, Queens, where she pioneered the integration of innovative technology into the learning environment. Under her leadership, the school became the first in New York City to feature a Creative Learning System SMART-STEM Lab, a landmark achievement in modernizing education.

Rebecca returned to District 32 in 2018 as Deputy Superintendent, bringing her vast experience and commitment to supporting the community she grew up in. As a mother of three sons, her leadership was always guided by the understanding that every child, regardless of their background or circumstances, deserves an opportunity to succeed.

Rebecca holds a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing Management from Bernard M. Baruch College, a dual Master’s degree in Special Education and Bilingual Education from Long Island University, certifications in School Building Leadership and School District Leadership, an Advanced degree in Administrative Leadership from the College of Saint Rose, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Concordia University, Chicago. She is also a proud alumna of the Chancellor’s Fellowship program, cohort X.

Recently, Rebecca was selected to join an elite committee responsible for evaluating universities through the accreditation process (AA EQP) as the Local Practitioner. She was just awarded the lifelong achievement award for “Excellence In Educational Leadership” by Boricua College. As a lifelong learner, she actively engages in opportunities for growth, collaborating with colleagues across the city, borough, and District 32.

As of October 1, 2024, Rebecca retired from her role as Community School Superintendent of District 32 after a distinguished career. Throughout her tenure, the district made significant academic gains, improved leadership capacity and strengthened community ties. She led with passion, vision, and a steadfast commitment to ensuring that all students have the tools and opportunities they need to thrive academically and beyond.

Rebecca’s legacy is not just the impact she made on her district, but the lives she touched—the educators she mentored, the students she inspired, and the families she supported. Her lifelong commitment to learning, growth, and advocacy for her community will continue to resonate for years to come.
