Michael Athy is honored to serve the Executive Leadership Institute as coach, consultant & mentor. His educational career was preceded by 20 years in international business where he acquired appreciation for cultural differences & the skills needed for improving large-scale operations, collaborating with collective bargaining units & developing leadership capacities.
Athy taught at Hillcrest High School (Jamaica), participating in its conversion to Smaller Learning Communities (SLCs) while expanding College & Career services. After 13 years as principal of Bayside High School, including 3 representing principals on CSA’s Executive Board, he retired in 2022.
Combining his private sector experience with degrees from Queens and Baruch Colleges, while principal Athy optimized student performance while strategically implementing initiatives to ensure the long- term development of his school community including:
-Increasing graduations; implementing comprehensive Whole Child Guidance; revising admissions; designing branding & public relations; reducing enrollment; converting school from academic, comprehensive to Career & Technical Education (CTE); introducing college-accredited & AP courses with work-based learning options; revolutionizing programming; supervising staff of 290 (175 pedagogues); implementing diversifying hiring policies & PD; combining disparate data systems into a single, accessible platform; creating practice analysis teams for ongoing continuous improvement; creating a network of large school principals & alumni association; overseeing annual operational & facilities budgets of $20 & $30 million; training grant-seeking personnel resulting in capital & project funding; and drinking lots of coffee.
